These Are the Most Popular Ice Cream Flavors in America, According to Twitter

With summer just around the corner (and already rearing its head in certain parts of the country), we’ve got ice cream on the brain. So we reached out to the folks at Twitter and asked them which ice cream flavors people are Tweeting about the most, and after crunching some numbers for us, they were able to exclusively tell us which flavors have gotten the most Twitter mentions in each state over the past year.

Believe it or not, every state had chocolate as its most tweeted-about flavor, with vanilla coming in second place. But the third-place flavor differed from state to state, with three flavors getting nearly all of the third-place mentions: cookie dough, strawberry, and chocolate chip. Here’s how it broke down:

Cookie Dough: Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Hawaii, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, New York, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Washington D.C., West Virginia, Wisconsin

Strawberry: Arkansas, California, Georgia, Maryland, Mississippi, Montana, North Carolina, Oregon, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, Wyoming

Chocolate Chip: Delaware, Idaho, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Washington

Eagle-eyed geography buffs might have noticed that there’s a state missing from the list; the one outlier is Louisiana, which voted for brownie as its No. 3 flavor.

And in case you’re wondering which states had the most ice cream discussion on Twitter per capita? The list (counting down from No. 10) is: Texas, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, California, Georgia, Maryland, Arizona, and Washington, D.C., which took the top spot. They must really like their ice cream in the capital! For America’s 35 best ice cream parlors, click here.

Poll Reveals America’s Favorite Ice Cream Flavor

National Ice Cream Month is upon us and National Ice Cream Day is right around the corner on Sunday, July 15. Therefore, we have all the excuses (as if we need them) to chow down on all things ice cream-related. And if there’s one thing Americans can agree on, it’s got to be this creamy cold dessert.

A poll conducted by YouGov.com recently revealed America’s favorite ice cream flavor to be none other than classic chocolate. Surprising? Not exactly, but we’re just happy it wasn’t sherbet.

America’s second favorite flavor is vanilla, followed by butter pecan, cookies ‘n’ crème, mint chocolate chip, chocolate chip cookie dough, strawberry, pistachio, rocky road, chocolate chip and cake batter. With age factored in, people between the ages of 18 and 34 prefer cookies ‘n’ creme and chocolate chip cookie dough, while people ages 55 and up are more likely to choose butter pecan and vanilla.

And let’s not forget the toppings! America’s favorite topping is hot fudge, followed by nuts, chocolate syrup, Oreo crumbles and sprinkles.

According to the new data, 96 percent of Americans eat ice cream, which is pretty surprising given the number of vegans and lactose intolerant people out there. What’s even more surprising is that 69 percent of Americans said they would choose regular ice cream over low-calorie alternatives any day.
